Swain County located in the southwestern part of North Carolina is a small, but diverse county. Having the border of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to its west makes it an outdoor destination for the eastern portion of the United States that brings many visitors to the county. Tourism is obviously a major component of the economic engine, but several other industries are important in the community. The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, which is primarily a tourist- based operation, has the ability to ship for commercial customers. US 74 a divided four-lane highway runs through the county connecting it to Interstate 40 approximately 45 miles to the north. The County has an industrial park located just west of Bryson City with utilities that include city water and sewer, electric, natural gas, and currently fiber for broadband needs.
Two of the local manufacturers are expanding; Consolidated MetCo, an injection molding company that provides interior components to the truck industry and Affco, a subsidiary of Zickgraf Co. that manufactures wood flooring products. Southwestern Community College serves to help companies in training the local workforce for special applications if needed. The county has an active Economic Development Commission that is ready and willing to help companies with their requests. The local government is business-friendly with competitive tax and utilities rates. Doing business in a beautiful environment such as Swain County promotes positive attitudes and the outlook for success.
